Barack Obama and Abortion
Moving the Abortion Debate Beyond Partisan Purists
I know how extremely difficult it is for christians to get past the pro-choice stance Senator Obama holds. I have wrestled with it myself, but I finally think I can articulate it:
I believe there are many so-called 'pro-life' issues that have been sadly missing from our national dialogue (and this is unfortunately true in many conservative churches as well) Such things as poverty, the death penalty, war, the environment, genocide, violence, and corporate gluttony and the role they play all these things are very rarely if ever part of non-partisan politics. I realize the right to life folks believe abortion murders children, and that the rest of the 'badness' in America is a direct result of our national support of RvW. But I've come to see things a bit differently...
I believe abortion is a spin-off of so many of the other pro-life ideas mentioned above. This has been a fundamental shift in my understanding of this difficult issue. I can now see both sides' point of view, and could argue and defend either. But I've come down on the pro-choice side as far as my politics not because I think abortion is suddenly A-OK....but because I'm tired of only hearing that abortion is THE pro-life issue. It's so much more complex than that.
For me to vote for Republicans in November would be to vote against that entire list above. I really don't believe the GOP gives a rat's ass about most of them. To vote for McCain is to vote for the status quo in our nation. The 'bleeding heart liberals' however drone on ad naseum (thank the Higher Power) about all kinds of human-supporting policies. Obama even has meticulous plans to take the offensive in many, if not all, of them.
It's just not enough for me any more to push a button because someone says they're 'pro-life' because they simply oppose abortion.....they need to show me other ways they support life....and not just the rich lives in our country.
So, take it or leave it. That's how I've settled the question for myself.
